In December last year, the month Vigan was announced a Wonder City, at least 350,000 tourists flocked here, surpassing the city’s annual tourist arrival in 2013, Provincial Tourism Officer Michael Ryan Astom said. “In December [2014] alone, we had 350,000 tourists in Vigan. Unexpectedly, it surpasses our annual tourist arrival of 271,000 in 2013,” he told The Manila Times.

VIGAN, the Philippines: Historic Vigan in the province of Ilocos Sur was officially inaugurated as a New7Wonders City last night. Established in the 16th century, Vigan represents a fusion of cultural elements from the Philippines, China and Europe, creating a city that is without equal in Asia.

Among the dignitaries attending the ceremony held within the precincts of St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, were Philippines Vice President Jejomar Binay, New7Wonders Founder-President Bernard Weber and Mayor Eva Medina of Vigan. The guest speaker at the inauguration, Vice President Binay, said that the event should serve as an inspiration for how heritage preservation can be best harmonized with urban development. “In our quest to become strong competitors in the ASEAN and global economies, we cannot be too quick to tear down the old to build the new without serious deliberation and debate,” he said, adding, “As Vigan has proven, prosperity is not always measured by a city’s skyline. And it is not just malls that can bring in tourists and trade.”

Binay urged the people of Vigan to remain committed to promoting their culture and share their best practices to other regions. “Billions of dollars have been spent in cultural preservation and restoration. These costs would not have been incurred if peoples — past and present — had been mindful of their actions, if they had had more respect for their own and other peoples’ cultural legacies and for our own earth,” he said.

Along with a colourful show featuring light and dance, the event was marked by the unveiling of a specially-commissioned bronze commemorative plaque, which was cast in the Kunstgießerei München, a traditional metal foundry in the heart of Munich, Germany.

The Official New7Wonders Cities Inauguration ceremonies for Vigan will take place in the Philippines on Wednesday, 6 May. A highlight of the event will be the unveiling of the specially-commissioned bronze commemorative plaque, which was cast in the Kunstgießerei München, a famous foundry in the heart of Munich, Germany, where metal becomes memory using a combination of art and craft that dates back to ancient times.

Bernard Weber, Founder-President of New7Wonders, has taken part in all stages of the plaque-making process: design, casting and the application of the patina finish. “By following this sequence of steps, the cast plaque gets its colours and is brought to life,” he said, observing foundry proprietor Hasan Göktepe at his work.

Vigan, the first of the New7Wonders Cites to be officially inaugurated, is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Established in the 16th century, its architecture echoes the fusion of cultural elements from the Philippines, China and Europe, creating a city that is without equal in Asia.

Abu Dhabi, UAE: Solar Impulse pilot Bertrand Piccard (left) receiving good luck wishes from Bernard Weber, Founder-President of New7Wonders (right), before today’s historic Solar Impulse flight.

Abu Dhabi / Zurich: Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg are piloting the first round-the-world flight without using any fossil fuel, just solar energy, and New7Wonders is supporting their historic adventure with an initiative that shares the mission’s goal of using clean technologies and renewable energy.

The Solar Impulse plane took off from Abu Dhabi this morning and during its journey the global public is encouraged to get involved in the mission by following a live-stream of the flight and by voting for the vision of a clean-energy future on www.FutureIsClean.org.

“The entire New7Wonders team wishes Bertrand and André the best luck and a safe return,” says Bernard Weber, Founder-President of New7Wonders, who points out that Bertrand Piccard is a Patron of New7Wonders.

A highlight of the movement’s first campaign was the New7Wonders World Tour, which captured international attention in 2006 and 2007 as it circumnavigated the globe and, says Bernard Weber, “This time a New7Wonders supporter and champion from the very early days is going on a World Tour.”

The technology: The carbon-fibre Solar Impulse aircraft has a wingspan of 72 metres — wider than a Boeing 747 jet, yet it weighs only 2.3 tonnes, no more than a modern sedan car. The wings are covered by thousands of solar cells that drive four electric motors at speeds of up to 140km/h. During the day, the solar cells recharge lithium batteries, which keep the plane’s propellers turning through the night.

The challenge: Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg will take turns at the controls for five consecutive days and nights during their 35,000km journey, logging an expected 500 flight hours. The adventure represents an enormous physical test for both men in an unpressurized and unheated single-seat-cockpit coping with temperatures ranging from +40°C to -40°C. Solar Impulse is fully sustainable in terms of energy; the job of the pilots now is to showcase that its sustainability is realistic for humans as well.

Bernard Weber, Founder-President New7Wonders, looking forward to building the Wall of Wonders, the virtual manifestation of of the New7Wonders movement, in 2015 and beyond.

Zurich, Switzerland: Warmest greetings to all the friends of New7Wonders around the world!

Our past year was crowned on 7 December with the declaration in Dubai of the New7Wonders Cities, and in 2015 we look forward to arranging Official Inauguration events in each of the elected 7: Beirut, Doha, Durban, Havana, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz and Vigan. I extend my sincere thanks to all who voted in the campaign.

In the coming year, our focus will be very much on building the Wall of Wonders, a digital platform designed to bring together the people of the world. Over time, this interactive wall will become the virtual manifestation of our movement. All the images, comprising millions and millions of pixels made of photos of people from all over the world, of all races, religions and cultures, will create the full wall image of the voted New7Wonders of the World and the New7Wonders of Nature.

On the occasion of the launch, I said, “To leave your mark forever, your eternal imprint, go to wallofwonders.com upload your photo and become part of ‘#7billionWoW‘ — the Wall of Wonders.”

The Wall of Wonders is an exciting development with great potential for creating a positive message when the news is dominated by stories of suffering and sorrow. During difficult times it is especially important that we are ready to encourage and offer support wherever we can, and New7Wonders urges all the members of its global community to be there for each other throughout the coming year.

In this spirit of hope and harmony, I wish you a Happy New Year!

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Announcing the names of the New7Wonders Cities, Bernard Weber, Founder-President of New7Wonders, said: “I would like to thank everyone who has helped promote the New7Wonders Cities campaign since its inception in 2011. We began with more than 1,200 nominees from 220 different countries and here we have 7 that represent the global diversity of urban society. For the first time in human history, more than half of our planet’s population lives in cities and this election emphasises the dramatically challenging character of our changing world.”

Bernard Weber thanked the New7Wonders Cities Panel of Experts, which advised on the selection of the 28 Official Finalist Candidates in October last year, and he congratulated the voters who narrowed the selection down to 7 through the subsequent elimination phases.

The results announced this evening in Dubai are based on the counting of votes since the campaign ended at 7 am GMT this morning. They will now be checked, validated and independently verified. Once the verification process has been completed, New7Wonders will then work with the confirmed cities to organise Official Inauguration events. Note: If it happens that any of the cities announced this evening is not confirmed during the verification process, New7Wonders will issue a media update when this occurs.

“We congratulate each of these cities on achieving their New7Wonders status, and we look forward to celebrating their election to the “canon of 7″ with their citizens in 2015,” said Bernard Weber, adding, “The New7Wonders Cites will now join the New7Wonders of Nature and the New7Wonders of the World in becoming part of Global Memory for humanity for ever.”
