New7Wonders of Nature Table Mountain

Viewing Table Mountain through the Signal Hill frame

The new Signal Hill frame offers Cape Town visitors an idyllic vantage point for getting into the frame when composing a photo or taking a selfie with Table Mountain in the background.
The New7Wonders Signal Hill frame offers Cape Town visitors Linda Stichert and Miriam Egloff from Switzerland an idyllic vantage point for getting into the frame when enjoying their Table Mountain moment.

A giant yellow picture frame, the second in a series of such structures to be introduced across Cape Town, has been unveiled on Signal Hill, providing a perfect vantage point for visitors to compose a photograph of themselves, friends and family with Table Mountain as the spectacular backdrop.

The 2.8m tall by 4m wide frame was produced by local artist Porky Hefer to celebrate Table Mountain being named one of the New7Wonders of Nature, and the interactive artwork is an official World Design Capital 2014 project.

In its report on the frames, the South African Broadcasting Corporation quotes Porky Hefer: “The amazing scenery of nature and picturesque view should be highlighted in the urban environment. The idea is that people can take photos of this, the best views of Table Mountain, to show everybody.” He added: “The idea is that after you have seven different angles, the images are each different, showing certain aspects of the mountain, at different times of the day and have a little photographic tour to try and go see the other views of Table Mountain that they’re not used to.”

“As custodians of the park we focus on managing an ecological system that is a benchmark for the globe, but we are also sensitive to the need to provide spaces for visitors to enjoy these natural wonders,” said Wana Bacela, Area Manager: North, Table Mountain National Park. “This campaign is a wonderful way to give visitors the opportunity to capture Table Mountain’s true beauty within our environment.”

“The election of Table Mountain as one of the New7Wonders of Nature in a hugely popular global voting campaign was not just a triumph for South Africa; it was a victory for an entire continent,” said Eamonn Fitzgerald, New7Wonders Head of Communication. “The frames now being deployed across Cape Town highlight a distinctively African experience and achievement in a uniquely home-grown way.”

As with the frame unveiled at the V&A Waterfront in September, the Signal Hill frame provides visitors with an eye-catching perspective of one of nature’s New7 Wonders, and they can share their photos on the Table Mountain website.

“We are delighted that visitors to Signal Hill will get to interact with the frame in the build-up to World Design Capital 2014; it is a wonderful way to celebrate nature’s perfect design of Table Mountain,” said Sabine Lehmann, MD of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company.

As part of the New7Wonders legacy, the foundation has launched the WonderLove initiative, an international promotion offering couples a chance to win one of seven all-inclusive trips to their favourite New7Wonder of Nature, departing from anywhere on the planet. The competition is open to all and the winners will be announced on 14 February 2014.
