The 35,224 fans who watched last Sunday’s football game between South Korea and Jordan in the World Cup Stadium in Seoul saw the local team win 3-1. That was the competition. But there was also co-operation in the form of an announcement of mutual support for two of the Finalists in the New7Wonders of Nature campaign: Jeju Island and the Dead Sea.

Among those attending the declaration of the joint Jeju Island-Dead Sea initiative were the Jordanian ambassador to South Korea, Omar Nahar, along with executives of the Korea Football Association, including Jung Monjoon FIFA vice chairman and Cho Jung Yeon KFA president. Present also was a Jeju Island delegation that included the governor, Woo Keunmin, and the Chairman of the National Committee for Jeju New7Wonders of Nature, Chung Unchan, who congratulated ambassador Nahar on the selection of Petra as one of the New7Wonders of the World.

South Korea and Jordan will play each other again this evening in the Asian Football Confederation Pre-Olympic Tournament in Amman International Stadium. At stake is a place in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Football is among the top team sports at the 2012 Olympic Games and matches will be played in London, Manchester, Cardiff, Newcastle, Glasgow and Coventry, from 25 July to 11 August. The finals will be played at Wembley Stadium. In next year’s Olympic football, men will compete in a 16-team tournament, and women in a 12-team tournament.
